General Environment Law (Law 19,300)

Framework law on environmental policy, management and oversight. Establishes the Environmental Assessment System, sets emission and quality standards and creates prevention and decontamination plans. The law was substantially modified by the environmental institutions reform introduced by the Law 20,417. Version released 13-11-2010.

Law that creates the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) and the Superintendence of Environment, a major redesign of environmental institutions in Chile. The law centralizes the environmental competencies in dedicated bodies. The Ministry of Environment is responsible for policymaking, the Environmental Assessment Service is in charge of the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA) and the Superintendence is responsible for oversight.



Emission standard for thermoelectric power plants (Decree 13)

Standard that establishes emission limits specific to thermoelectric power plants: particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO2) and mercury (Hg). Version released 23-06-2011.



Environmental quality standard for fine respirable particulate matter PM 2.5 (Decree 12)

Sets primary environmental quality standard for fine respirable particulate matter PM 2.5. Version released 9-05-2011.



Native Forest Law (Law 20,283)

Law on recovery of native forests and forest development. Governs management plans for logging native forests, its environmental protection, oversight and fines. Version released 30-07-2008.

General Regulation of the Native Forest and Forest Development Law, laying down the procedures for management plans and work plans indicated in the law and establishes the form and conditions to be granted exceptional interventions. Version released 05-10-2009.

Indigenous Law (Law 19,253)

General Law of Indigenous Peoples. The law establishes standards for indigenous protection, promotion and development. It affects projects to be developed in indigenous territories, which must consider, in addition to environmental obligations, consultation with indigenous groups and supplementary compensation and approval processes. ILO Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention 169

International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. Chile ratified the International Convention supplementing the Indigenous Law and establishing additional standards for protecting the rights of indigenous peoples, deals with the recognition of the status of peoples, the respect for their ways of life and their economic development and the recognition of their lands and territories.
